In the early eighties, as young college friends, we embarked on a pilgrimage across India to explore her art and soul, The unique jewelry, worn by tribal communities we encountered, and objects, bartered in markets we visited, caught our eye; and what began as a tentative exploration of a country, transformed over time into a lifelong passion for decorative arts. Drawing heavily on the everyday life of the people of India, especially its tribes-makes this museum unique amongst its peers, showcasing the wonder that is Indian art, design, and craftsmanship. The museum has several areas of focus over two floors. The ground floor displays items of beauty and adornment, silver and gold jewelry for every part of the body, from virtually every region of India; with a special focus on pieces that are connected with rites of passage, from birth to death. Amrapali Museum is an initiative by the founders of Amrapali Jewels Pvt. Ltd. The museum is dedicated to Indian jewelry and jeweled objects, located in the city of Jaipur. Amrapali Museum is another gem from the House of Amrapali, It is one of a kind jewelry museum, the setup is amazing, and the collection is so unique and inspiring. The jewelry takes you to a different era, it’s almost like watching Indian history live.

The basement houses numerous inspirations for the design that have been available to the Indian craftsman over time, seen through both the jewelry and the range of silver objects in the collection. While the journey of Amrapali Jewels began in Jaipur, we can proudly affirm that our commitment to revive older Indian aesthetics, with contemporary ingenuity, has reached every part of the globe. Jewellery from India is today a recognizable brand the world over, so when people use terms like Tribal, Mughal, Rajput, Temple, etc., we confidently stake the claim of being forerunners in revitalizing these genres. Our Museum Collection, over the years, has been available for study and research to scholars, designers, travelers, students, and connoisseurs. This endeavor is just the beginning of how we hope to share the extraordinary living culture of our country as seen across its regions, rituals, and religions. The treasures that we collected over innumerable journeys punctuate the narrative of this museum and are an enduring legacy of our fascination with India.

In AD 77, Roman senator and writer Pliny the Elder called India “the sink of the world’s precious metal”. You don’t realize what he meant till you visit the recently opened Amrapali Museum—it houses nearly 4,000 artifacts painstakingly collected from across the Indian subcontinent. When friends and Amrapali co-founders Rajiv Arora and Rajesh Ajmera started the brand in 1978 in Jaipur, they began collecting old jewelry; a single piece could be broken down to create multiple newer pieces. But soon realization hit—so many of these designs were one of a kind and needed to be preserved. Thirty-four years later, they embarked on a six-year project, which resulted in the Amrapali Museum. From silver anklets for horses’ legs and Kalamkari panels with real gold, to a silver door, and back-scratchers that conceal blades at the ends, the pieces make you wonder. How did someone wear this and walk? Who was the designer? If they lived now they would probably be Instagram sensations… And each one holds staggering information about the life and times of people, and you possibly cannot absorb it all in one visit; we pick our favorites.

    Wandering through the hushed confines of the newly-opened Amrapali Museum in Jaipur, I find myself transfixed at how Indian jewelry has so deeply imbibed the cultural complexities of each region. This geographic diversity lends itself to a rich tradition of ornamentation. At once a celebration of the human form and its timeless linkages with cosmic forces, the glorious pieces on display here are a vivid reminder of how the art of ornamentation is an integral part of ordinary life. Styles created by the numerous regional tribes of India are on display at this compact museum. On display at the museum is a stunning variety of chains, pendants, amulets, head and hair ornaments, earpieces, torso and shoulder ornaments, belts and buckles, armlets, wristlets and cuff bracelets, bangles and bracelets, rings and toe rings, and anklets, sourced from the far reaches of the Indian subcontinent by Rajiv Arora and Rajesh Ajmera, founders of the luxury brand Amrapali Jewels, over 50-odd years.

    Their business enterprise, Amrapali Jewels—established in 1978—was done with the purpose to address this issue. Over the years, the internationally-acclaimed jewelry brand has regularly used the collections gathered by its founders to take inspiration for their modern offerings; an initiative that is increasingly being credited as the brand’s USP. Arora and Ajmera, however, felt more was to be done: to share their collection with scholars, students, connoisseurs, and other visitors to Jaipur, as well as to highlight India’s traditional silver jeweled arts. And thus, Amrapali Museum was born this year.
